Tips And Tricks For Computer Security

If demons like a keystroke logger, and the possibility of managing to download computer monitoring software without even realizing it, do not scare the living daylight out of you, you obviously don’t realize how menacing they can be. The fact that you could download computer monitoring software to end up having a keystroke logger log every single thing you type, by doing something as trivial as clicking on an ad showcases the threat the looms every time penetrate the ‘marvelous’ world of the Internet. Computer security and ensuring that your PC wards off any probing advances of hackers is extremely important; and considering all aspects that could hamper your defense mechanism, here’s how you can shore up your rearguard effectively…

Use Anti-Virus Software
It is extremely pivotal for your computer’s security that it has a new, top-drawer, updated anti-virus running, which forms the first line of defense of any device. The antivirus needs to be regularly updated, and while most of them are configured as such to automatically update themselves, but you need to keep an eye in case they need to be manually upgraded.

Use a Firewall
Firewall is your barrier between malware that creeps stealthily into your system – both your device and your brain – via the Internet. Firewall is extremely important for the safety of any Internet connection. And even if you have a dialup connection, a firewall is imperative to guard your system against Internet malware.

Install Security Patches
Software fragility is what most malware exploit, and hence they need to be regularly discovered and updated. That does not mean that all you need to do is update the Windows, and you’re safe. You should apply updates on all of the software on your system – at least on a monthly basis.

Secure the Browser
While Internet Explorer might be earmarked as the ‘devil’s den’ as far as spyware is concerned, it isn’t exactly the browser that you need to worry about. What you need to worry about, is securing your browser, and that can be done by disabling javascript for all sites – except the essential ones like your ecommerce sites. This will also get rid of those god forsaken pop ups that can be a torture for both your nerves and your PC’s security.

Monitor Emails
Emails can prove to be the up of malware, and hence you should always be meticulously prudent with regards to scanning each attachment that accompanies the email. Most worms and spam spoof the name of the sender to make a mockery out of your system’s security. Make sure you dodge that particular bullet.

Avoid P2P file sharing
File sharing networks, like Torrent, Kazaa etc, are other major source of spyware. Since they are free, users succumb to the temptation and get a dose of trojan-laden beasts instead. And since there are no free lunches, or so the cliché goes, there is no such thing as anonymous file sharing which is safe and secure.

Keep Yourself Updated on Internet Scams
Hackers are a cunning species, and the array of threats they can conjure up on the Internet is alarmingly wide. Sad stories, job offers, lottery winning news, these are all manufactured to tempt the users. Make sure you side step such drivel.
Your computer’s security defines your security. If you aren’t careful, malware like keystroke logger can easily penetrate your security and extract every single iota of data from your PC, without you finding out about it. You wouldn’t want that to happen, now would you?
